The Industrial Manifesto!

This is why we fight.

Lean - the Great Lie

"How can Lean be a lie?" I know you are asking yourself. Lean alone may be a good business strategy, but the implementation of Lean in all is wonderful and glorious aspects are lies.

I now have a question for you who are now reading this chapter of the Manifesto, "How does one provide his or herself with some degree of job security?" I know that you are saying, "Duh, that's a no-brainer. An individual needs to show that he or she is a valuable asset to the company, and that he or she does something above and beyond the work accomplished by his or her peers."

What is this thing called, Love, that makes one 'special' in the eyes of those who have the power to terminate the employment of others? Well, that, my friend, is what we call Lean.

Lean is a business practice that is used to eliminate waste in all process to maximize returns. Lean also has created an entirely new class of employees - the Lean Experts, Gurus, Black Belts, Shaman, whatever they are called within a particular organization.

So, an organization adds more overhead as means to eliminate waste thus getting the greatest return on assets? This is a rather interesting concept. To show any real improvement to the bottom line, a company has to first pay for Lean and then goes above and beyond that.

And who is responsible for seeing to that Lean is making the promised claims that it has given to those of the C-class? How ironic that it is those at the bottom of the food chain. We, the workers of this nation, the ones who actually do the work, are the ones who have to make these grand schemes work by making improvements to what we do, to how we do it, or to where we are employed if we are employed at all. This is called delegating authority or empowerment, or passing the buck because as anyone at the top (C-class, Lean Shaman, management in any form) will tell us it is not their responsibility to know anything about how the work gets done, they are paid for their conceptual reasoning and showing the shareholders that they can implement the grand schemes that they are entrusted with.

The lie lays in the fact that this grand scheme is at least 80 years old and would have made Henry Ford proud. If Mr. Ford happened to be still alive these days, he would have been a Lean Grand Master. Change the name of the process, give yourself a wonderful sounding title that looks great on your resume, and you have saved yourself from the aftermath of implementing Lean.

These grand schemes that are older than most of us must be eliminated from the face of our industrial landscape. We can just as easily call ourselves Industrial or Manufacturing Black Belts as those who sit in their offices can call themselves Lean Shaman or whatever they are calling themselves this week. We will wage our own war on the stupidity of the corporate mindset. We will take back what is rightfully ours, and we will once again be admired by the captains of industry.

We are the visionaries who look to change the future. We are those who are brave enough to venture into this new frontier. We are the revolutionaries who will bring about this change. The time to act is now. The need for change is now. The Revolution begins now.
