WinBeam, Inc. today announced that it has received
authorization from the Federal Communications
Commission (FCC) to build and operate fixed wireless
broadband networks in Frostburg, Maryland and
Fredericksburg, Virginia. The company's application
for Cumberland, Maryland is still pending. WinBeam
will utilize the licenses in the 2.1 GHz and 2.5
- 2.7 GHz range to deliver broadband services
to these markets.
The
WinBeam licenses were part of hundreds of applications
filed by fixed wireless operators during the FCC's
initial filing window of August 14-18, 2000. This
was the first opportunity for operators of Multichannel
Multipoint Distribution Service (MMDS) and Instructional
Television Fixed Service (ITFS) radio frequencies
to file for licenses to provide tow-way communications
services.
"With
these licenses we are now in a position to deploy
broadband networks in areas where they are really
needed", said Robert Patterson, WinBeam's
General Manager. "We hope the availability
of high-speed service in small and rural markets
will make the communities more competitive."
