Message from Our District Governor

Lions, Lioness, Leos,

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!!! That is definitely what happened for the Council Meeting in Washington . It was not what we had planned but all business was conducted by the Council along with many of the other activities being completed. The hospitality night with Patsy Cline and Jerry Lee Lewis was a hit-no pun intended. We have received numerous “thank you’s” from many of the attendees who were impressed with how well everything went in the adverse conditions. Kudos to the committee for all their hard work and to the staff at the Holiday Inn who were very helpful.

The House of Delegates met to select a candidate from Pennsylvania for the position of International Director. PDG Sam Wagner from District 14 T was selected. We wish him well in his campaign.

The deadline for the Mini-Convention in March is near- please contact ZC Eric Dolfi to make your reservation. We have some interesting workshops lined up and a surprise guest from out of state will be there- you have to come to find out who it is!  The Spring Party is right behind this and we have PID Leland Kolkmeyer from Missouri as our guest speaker. Looking forward to seeing you all at these upcoming events.

We’re coming down the home stretch of the Lions’ year and membership remains a concern, as always. Continue to invite folks to your meetings and encourage them to become Lions and join the world’s largest service organization.

Paint a Bright Future by continuing to MOVE TO GROW.

    Yours in Lionism, DG Rich

MESSAGE FROM FIRST VDG ROBERT E. RAFAIL

Fellow Lions, Lioness, and Leos,

By now, most of you who attended the State Council Meeting in Washington , PA should be thawed out enough to look back upon the event as one of the most memorable State Council Meetings in recent history.  In spite of all the adverse weather and other inconveniences that accompanied the loss of power and heat, I would like to state that like most of you, I had a wonderful time in spite of it all.  There were plenty of opportunities to renew old friendships and to make new acquaintances.  There was also a great display of cooperation and helping others that we normally don’t get to witness.   PDG Gloria, the Committee, and everyone who helped or donated are to be commended.  This also goes for the staff and management at the Holiday Inn who went above and beyond the call of duty to make us as comfortable and safe as possible.

The Council was able to complete everything on their agenda and the House of Delegates met and endorsed PDG Sam Wagner for the position of International Director.  Unfortunately, PDG Bill Hill was not selected as the endorsed candidate but I would personally like to thank Lion/Lioness Dottie and Lion Bill for representing our District with such distinction and honor.  We were fortunate to have such an illustrious slate of candidates and I know that PDG Sam will represent the Lions of Pennsylvania well and will follow in the footsteps of our previous MD-14 Directors.

Finally, as I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, it is time to begin the process of electing officers for the 2010 - 2011 year of Lionism.  Check your Club’s Constitution and Bylaws or refer to LCI’s Standard Club Constitution and Bylaws (available online) to determine what procedures you need to follow to nominate and elect officers so that you are able to submit your PU-101 (Officer Reporting form also available online)  to LCI and to me (First VDG Bob not to DG Rich) no later than May 15th (Earlier is better – Thanks).   Your club secretary can also submit the information electronically using the MMR reporting method.   If you need assistance contact your ZC or RC.

I hope to see you at the District Convention on March 20th, and at the Spring Party on April 10th.   Meanwhile, keep the M&A rolling in and prepare to file you PU-101.

Yours in Service and Lionism,

First Vice District Governor Bob

If you are not planning to file your PU-101 online and do not have a hard copy, please complete the following form and MAIL ONE COPY to LCI and a second copy to FIRST VDG ROBERT RAFAIL (NOT DG RICH) at 149 N. Gallatin Avenue, Uniontown, PA by May 15th (OR EARLIER IF POSSIBLE).  This will not only ensure that your incoming officers will receive information from LCI, the State, and District 14-M but your club’s information will also be listed in the District Directory for 2010 – 2011.

Message From Second Vice District Governor Marla Stankus

As our Lions year winds down we need to wind up our membership.  This as always is a concern for the District, the State and International.  This year is a concern because the women members have been down which is a first since women started joining.  I am going to try to do my part before the year ends.  A co-worker ask me if Lions still collect eye glasses and I told her yes so she brought me a pair and I explained how they are refurbished and sent over seas because they are a prescription and cannot be given to another in our country.  She said that made her feel so good, it just made her day.  I suggested that since that made her day then why not join Lions and she can make someone’s day more often with the work we do in Lions.  She joined that week.  We were selling tickets and they were passed out the night she joined.  Afterwards she asked why she wasn’t given any.  I said if you want them I would get them to you tomorrow.  Within 24 hours she sold 100 and wanted more.  She is young and wants to be involved.  She said she wants to attend the functions and do what she can.  I feel a Proud Lion and a Proud Sponsor coming up real soon and she is working on a new member.  It all happened over a single pair of glasses. You never know until you ask someone, all they can say is no.  My personal goal is to bring in three more Lions before the year is over.  I’m not sure I can but I am going to be asking a lot of people in hopes they will say yes!

I enjoyed the time I spent at the State Council Meeting, however I thought I was going to get warm since I had no electricity.  I got warm but it was inner warmth from all of the Lions from within the state and then I had to go home to no electric for a whole week.  But if it was not for the electricity you could say it was a beautiful week.  Everything just glistened!

Congratulations to PDG Sam Wagner for being endorsed for International Director.  Unfortunately our own candidate PDG Bill Hill was not the candidate of choice but him and Dottie represented us well.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming events, Region/Zone Meeting, District Mini-Convention and the Spring Party.
