SDSL FAQ

What is DSL?

DSL stands for "Digital Subscriber Line," a broadband technology using telephone lines and digital coding to create an Internet connection from your computer. That connection can carry vast amounts of voice, video and data information at very high speeds. More importantly, DSL is a constant connection to the Internet. Since you don't have to dial in, there are no busy signals. You will not get disconnected, as is sometimes the case with a dial-up connection through a regular modem.

DSL Service Comparison

To make a beneficial decision for your business, it is imperative that you have the most up-to-date information available. In the following sections we will provide information necessary to make an educated decision about what type of service would be most suited to your Internet connectivity needs.

ADSL vs. SDSL

While there are now several different types of DSL commercially available for Internet connectivity, two types are most common and most widely available: ADSL and SDSL. Following is a comparison of these two types of DSL service and several reasons for choosing one over the other.

ADSL, or Asymmetrical DSL, means that your connection speed for downloading data is faster than your connection speed for uploading data. This type of DSL service is geared more towards a residential type application where the typical end-user is not concerned with being able to send large amounts of data to the Internet. ADSL is perfect for common residential high-speed requirements like downloading music or movies, playing online games, surfing the Internet, or receiving large E-mails. Normally ADSL has a dynamic IP address which can be released after long periods of inactivity. If you leave you PC unattended for a long period of time, you may come back to find that you have lost your connection.

SDSL, or Symmetrical DSL, means that your connection speed for downloading data is exactly the same as your connection speed for uploading data. This type of DSL service is ideal for a commercial application where the end-user needs to be able to send large amounts of data over the Internet. SDSL is perfect for applications like sending large E-mails with attachments to customers, uploading information to a company or corporate server, or updating web pages. This type of service almost always has a static IP address, which will never change and is essential for business type applications such as running a mail or web hosting server, or for networking the connection to multiple computers. Winbeam Commercial Solutions currently offers SDSL.

SDSL vs. Cable Modems

SDSL
Cable Modems
Runs over standard copper wire phone lines, which most businesses already have Requires coaxial cable, which is not available in most businesses
Has a static IP Address Most cable companies do not offer static IP Address options
Speed can be increased via the DSL provider if more bandwidth becomes necessary Speed varies based on the number of users concurrently online and can not be increased
Private, secured circuit All customers use the same cable. As more users go online, security and speed become issues

SDSL vs. Dial-up access

SDSL
Dial-up
24 hour, constant connection, that is always on. Requires the customer to dial into a server and be authenticated in order to receive access.
Desired speed can be purchased from the DSL provider and can range from 128Kbps to 1.0Mbps Speed varies depending on connection and phone lines, but has a maximum of 56Kbps.
Can provide access to multiple users and offices through one line and one account. Each user requires their own account and a separate phone line.
